The Importance of Using Mouthwash

You’ve heard it all your life: brush your teeth after every meal and always remember to floss. However, standard oral hygiene shouldn’t be a duopoly but a triumvirate. What’s missing? Rinsing with mouthwash.
In fact, a study published by the Academy of General Dentistry (ADG) revealed that using a germ-killing mouthwash reduced plaque buildup by 26% and gingivitis by 20%.
Still not convinced that mouthwash should be part of your daily dental care? Here are a few more benefits of using mouthwash:

Fluoride
Many mouthwash brands have fluoride, which prevents acids from damaging tooth enamel and repairing parts that already have damage (reversal of early decay). As such, a fluoride-containing mouthwash is ideal for people who are prone to developing cavities.

Loosens Food Particles
For many people, rinsing with mouthwash is the last step when brushing their teeth. However, rinsing before you start brushing can actually help loosen the food particles stuck between your teeth, thus making it easier for the toothbrush or floss to dislodge them.

Fresher Breath
Since the mouth is used for eating, it’s also a hotspot for bacteria that can cause bad breath. By using mouthwash, you can kill off these microbes and thus keep your breath fresher for longer.

To get the most out of your mouthwash though, be sure to consult your dentist about the best type and brand to use. Also, be sure to purchase your mouthwash from trusted retailers.
